Golf Cart Won’t Reverse? Forward/Reverse Troubleshooting

If your golf cart drives forward but will not reverse, the directional switch is one possible cause—not a confirmed diagnosis. Gas drivetrains, older electric switching systems and controller-based electric carts need different diagnostic procedures.

Record the symptoms before buying parts

• Does the cart fail only in reverse, or in both directions?
• Does the reverse alarm work? Note this separately from whether the cart moves.
• Is there a dashboard or controller fault code?
• Did the problem begin after battery, controller, switch or wiring work?
• What are the cart’s model, year, voltage and installed controller model?

Keep the cart parked and secured while checking labels and recording codes. With the key off, look for visible damage around accessible switch wiring without unplugging or probing circuits. Do not bypass interlocks, bridge solenoid terminals or force a direction lever.

Example: Navitas TAC2 direction-switch fault

For a cart fitted with a Navitas TAC2, fault 2-1 means the controller detected forward and reverse signals together. Navitas identifies the app’s diagnostic page as a way to view those direction inputs. This code definition applies to TAC2; check the correct manual for other controllers.

Why a missing click does not prove a bad solenoid

A solenoid also depends on its control circuit. Navitas’ troubleshooting distinguishes a solenoid problem from missing control voltage; sound alone does not settle the diagnosis. Electrical measurements and switch continuity tests belong in the correct model’s service procedure, with the required isolation and movement precautions.

Match the repair to the cart

A qualified technician can check the direction input, wiring, control circuit and drivetrain using the applicable schematic. Do not order a controller solely because the cart will not reverse.
