Golf Cart Solenoid Guide: 36V vs 48V vs 72V
A golf cart solenoid—often called a contactor in high-performance builds—is the high-current switch that connects battery power to the controller. When you upgrade a controller or convert from DC to AC, the stock contactor may no longer be the right choice.
The most common mistake is choosing a solenoid only from battery-pack voltage. Fitment is more specific than that.
What does a golf cart solenoid do?
When you turn the key on and press the accelerator, the solenoid/contactor allows the high-current battery circuit to feed the controller. The controller then regulates power to the motor.
A weak, undersized, or incorrectly wired contactor can create no-start problems, voltage drop, heat, welded contacts, or controller faults.
Coil voltage vs battery-pack voltage
The coil voltage is the control voltage used to energize the contactor. The main contacts carry the high-current traction circuit. These are related specifications, but they are not the same specification.
Follow the controller manufacturer’s wiring diagram and the contactor manufacturer’s ratings. Do not select a 36V, 48V, or 72V coil only because the battery pack has the same number printed on it.
36V golf cart solenoids
A 36V coil may be appropriate when the controller’s contactor-control circuit is designed for 36V. Older DC carts and certain conversion projects can fall into this category.
If you are converting a 36V cart to a 48V AC system, the new controller and conversion harness may require a different contactor than the original 36V cart used.
48V golf cart solenoids
48V systems are extremely common in modern electric golf carts and DC-to-AC conversions. A heavy-duty 48V contactor is often paired with higher-current controllers, but the exact wiring and control requirements still need to match.

72V golf cart solenoids
72V performance systems require a contactor chosen specifically for the controller and electrical design. Do not assume that changing the battery pack and controller is enough; the contactor, charger, motor, DC-to-DC converter, wiring, and protection devices all need to be reviewed.

Current rating matters too
A high-performance controller can demand far more current than a stock cart. The contactor should be selected for the expected current, switching duty, voltage, and controller manufacturer’s recommendation.
Do not size the contactor using controller peak amperage alone; the manufacturer’s application guidance is the better reference.
Symptoms of a bad or incorrect solenoid
- cart clicks but will not move
- no click when the pedal is pressed
- intermittent power
- hot terminals or cables
- visible burned contacts
- voltage drop across the contactor
- controller faults during acceleration
- contactor welded closed
These symptoms can also be caused by wiring, batteries, key switches, throttle circuits, or controller faults, so test before replacing parts.
When should you upgrade the solenoid?
Consider the contactor any time you:
- install a higher-current controller
- convert from DC to AC
- change system voltage
- install a larger motor
- replace a damaged or overheated stock solenoid
