Golf Cart Voltage Reducer Guide: 36V, 48V & 72V to 12V

A golf cart voltage reducer converts the traction-battery voltage down to a stable 12V supply for accessories such as lights, horns, USB outlets, radios and soundbars.

Why not power accessories from one battery?

On a series lead-acid pack, tapping a single battery for 12V accessories creates uneven discharge. That can shorten battery life and create imbalance across the pack.

A DC-to-DC converter uses the whole traction pack and provides a controlled 12V output.

Choose the correct input-voltage range

The reducer’s input range must include the cart’s actual battery voltage. A 48V-only reducer should not be assumed to work on a 72V conversion, and a 36V reducer may not survive a 48V pack.

How many amps do you need?

Add the current draw of the 12V accessories you plan to run at the same time, then leave reasonable headroom.

  • LED light kits use relatively little current.
  • Large sound systems and amplifiers can draw much more.
  • USB chargers and small electronics add to the total load.

A 25A or 30A reducer may be appropriate for many golf cart accessory systems, but the right size depends on the actual load.

36V-to-12V reducers

Use a converter specifically rated to accept the full charged voltage of a 36V pack, not just the nominal 36V number.

48V-to-12V reducers

48V systems are common on modern carts and lithium conversions. Make sure the reducer is also compatible with the battery’s fully charged voltage.

72V-to-12V reducers

A 72V build needs a reducer with an input range high enough for the fully charged battery pack. Do not reuse a 48V reducer unless it is specifically rated for that higher input voltage.

Where to mount the reducer

Mount it where it has airflow, stays reasonably dry, and can be wired with proper fusing. Avoid locations exposed to standing water or direct tire spray.
