Golf Cart Lithium Battery Guide: Voltage, Capacity, BMS & Fitment
Converting a golf cart from lead-acid batteries to lithium can simplify the battery compartment and reduce routine battery maintenance, but the battery still has to be matched correctly to the cart. Voltage, capacity and physical size are only the beginning.
Use this guide as a checklist before choosing a golf cart lithium battery.
1. Match the Correct System Voltage
Start with the cart's electrical system and the battery manufacturer's specified nominal voltage. Common golf cart systems include 36V, 48V and higher-voltage configurations, but you should verify your actual cart rather than ordering by assumption.
The battery has to work with the controller, motor system, charger and other high-voltage components. Accessories such as lights, stereos and USB chargers often operate at 12V through a separate converter.
2. Understand Amp-Hour Capacity
Amp-hours (Ah) describe electrical capacity, but comparing two batteries by Ah alone does not tell the whole story. Battery chemistry, voltage, usable state-of-charge range, vehicle load, terrain, tire size, speed and driving style all affect how far a cart travels on a charge.
When comparing lithium packs, look at the complete battery specifications and choose capacity based on how the cart is actually used rather than chasing a single range estimate.
3. Check the BMS Current Ratings
A lithium battery's battery management system (BMS) protects and manages the pack. For a performance golf cart, the BMS must be able to support the electrical demand of the controller and motor system.
Look at both the battery manufacturer's continuous-current specification and any permitted short-duration or peak-current specification. A high-amperage controller does not mean the cart continuously draws that maximum number, but the battery system still needs to be appropriate for the application.
4. Make Sure the Charger Is Compatible
Do not assume the original lead-acid charger is correct for a lithium replacement. Use a charger or charging system approved for the lithium battery you select and follow the battery manufacturer's charging instructions.
If a battery package includes a charger, confirm the connector and installation requirements for your cart.
5. Measure the Battery Compartment
Check the battery's published dimensions against the available space in the cart. Also plan for hold-down hardware, cable routing, service access and any required mounting brackets.
A battery that is electrically correct still needs to be securely installed and physically clear of moving components, sharp edges and areas that can damage cables.
6. Check Your Controller and Motor Setup
Stock and modified carts can place very different loads on a battery. If your cart has an upgraded controller, AC conversion kit, larger motor or other performance modifications, confirm battery compatibility with that system.

7. Plan for 12V Accessories
Many golf cart accessories need 12V power. A 36V, 48V or 72V lithium pack should not be connected directly to a 12V accessory unless the accessory is specifically designed for that input. A correctly sized DC-DC voltage reducer is commonly used to supply 12V accessories from the traction battery system.
8. Pay Attention to the Main Contactor and Cables
High-current connections need to be clean, tight and appropriately rated. On modified carts, the main solenoid/contactor and battery cables may be part of the upgrade plan. Browse golf cart solenoids and contactors if your controller or conversion-kit manufacturer calls for an upgraded unit.
