Yamaha G29, Drive & Drive2 AC Upgrade Guide
Yamaha golf cart fitment gets confusing when “G29,” “Drive,” “Drive2,” “YDRE,” and “YDRE2” get used interchangeably. They are related names, but they do not all describe the same drivetrain.
This matters when you are choosing between a complete Yamaha AC conversion kit and a controller-only AC upgrade.
G29 / Drive (YDRE): start by identifying DC vs AC
Many Yamaha G29/Drive conversion applications start with a factory DC drivetrain. If your cart still has the original DC motor, an AC controller by itself is not enough—you need a DC-to-AC conversion package with a matched AC motor and controller.
Browse our AC Conversion Kits and select Yamaha G29/Drive in the finder.
Drive2 / YDRE2 factory AC is a different path
Drive2 factory-AC carts can use Toyota NEOs M-type controller architecture. If your cart already has an AC motor, the correct purchase may be a controller upgrade rather than a full motor conversion.
Use the AC Controller Upgrade Finder and confirm the controller label before ordering.
How to tell which Yamaha system you have
- Confirm the exact model and year.
- Find the controller label.
- Identify whether the factory motor is AC or DC.
- Confirm current battery voltage.
- Photograph the controller connector.
- Record any NEOs model information shown on the controller.
G19 and G22 motor-clearance warnings
Some Yamaha conversion families offer both 4kW and 5kW motor packages, but larger motors do not fit every Yamaha chassis. Certain 5kW applications specifically exclude G19/G22 because of suspension or physical-clearance limitations.
This is why a “universal Yamaha” controller or motor description should never override the exact motor-clearance notes.
36V Yamaha to 48V AC conversion
Some conversion families can be used as part of a 36V-to-48V rebuild, but the new AC motor, controller, solenoid, charger, and battery pack may require a full 48V electrical conversion.
If the cart is currently 36V, do not assume the kit can run correctly while keeping the original 36V battery system.
What about 72V Yamaha builds?
Some standalone AC controllers are rated for 72V applications. A controller rating alone does not approve a factory 48V Drive2 for a complete 72V conversion.
Verify:
- motor voltage/RPM capability
- battery and BMS current
- charger
- solenoid/contactor
- DC-to-DC converter
- wiring and fuse sizing
- controller programming
Navitas Yamaha options
Navitas offers application-specific conversion and controller products. G29/YDRE DC-to-AC packages are distinct from Drive2/YDRE2 factory-AC NEOs controller upgrades.
That distinction is more important than choosing between 440A and 600A. First get the platform right; then choose the performance level.
Alltrax Yamaha options
Alltrax AC1 controller kits are also application-specific. A Drive2/YDRE2 controller package is not a generic replacement for every Yamaha electric cart.
Yamaha AC upgrade checklist
- G29/Drive or Drive2?
- Exact year?
- Factory AC or DC motor?
- Controller manufacturer and model?
- Current voltage?
- Target voltage after upgrade?
- Enough motor clearance?
- Correct solenoid/contactor?
